On Thursday, 27 October, SAICE WC held its End-of-Year Function at Kelvin Grove – the organization’s first in-person dinner since 2019. The event was well attended with representatives across the civil engineering spectrum from Contractors and Clients to Academics and Consultants.
The night had 155 guests in attendance, who were guided by the entertaining Andre Frieslaar as MC. Guests eagerly participated in the fun centerpiece-making challenge, where they were tasked with building their table centerpieces with building blocks.
SAICE WC hosted it’s third Women’s Meet, Greet & Eat on 27 August at Café Paradiso in Kloof Street. This intimate affair allowed attendees to share their stories, experiences and pearls of wisdom gained from working & studying both in South Africa and abroad.
On 24 August Jaco de Villiers addressed the branch with his presentation “The Changing Landscape for Structural Engineers in Cape Town” which was a reflection on his experience as a structural engineer over the past 20-years. He provided a broad introduction to structural engineering and the various building typologies he has been involved with from large warehouse structures through to high-rise buildings in the City centre. He referenced projects he had worked on to illustrate structural principals and provide anecdotes of the various challenges encountered and how they were resolved. It is unlikely many of the audience will be able to look at some of the city centre buildings in the same light again! Jaco closed his presentation with a reflection on the future of structural engineering and the various trends which may disrupt the industry from modular construction and the use of new materials, to sustainable design principals and Building Information Management. Jaco was supported by a strong turn-out of peers and colleagues from as far as Stellenbosch!
On the 15th of July, Dr. Emmanuel Matsika, a senior researcher at the Future Mobility Group (FMG), Newcastle University, gave an open lecture on “Accessible Rail Station Platform Independent Gap Filler for of Persons with Reduced Mobility”. In the lecture, Dr. Matsika highlighted that we must design transport systems that are inclusive because persons with reduced mobility are not necessarily a small group of people.
