On Thursday, 27 October, SAICE WC held its End-of-Year Function at Kelvin Grove – the organization’s first in-person dinner since 2019. The event was well attended with representatives across the civil engineering spectrum from Contractors and Clients, to Academics and Consultants.

The night had 155 guests in attendance, who were guided by the entertaining Andre Frieslaar as MC. Guests eagerly participated in the fun centerpiece-making challenge, where they were tasked with building their table centerpieces with building blocks. Special-mentions go to WBHO, for their impressive crane, the CPUT crew for their winning sculpture and Zutari for somehow reimagining the Burj Kalifa in Lego! Guests enjoyed a 3-course meal and a thought-provoking talk by guest speaker, Prof Mike Muller. His key message is that SAICE holds a unique position in the construction industry in that it is not aligned to any particular sector. It can thus seek out to be objective, a platform for critical debate and a voice of reason.

2022 SAICE President, and long serving branch member, Prof. Marianne Vanderschuren, presented the first branch award to the Provincial Department of Transport for their vision and efforts in supporting the industry during COVID-19 and the associated lockdowns. Guests got to mingle and network before dancing the rest of the evening away.

We would like to thank all guests and companies in attendance for their continued support and for making the evening a great success. A special thank you to our MC and guest speaker, and to SkySol for their sponsorship.

Photos from the event will be available shortly on our website: SAICE WC Branch. If you have any feedback, please let us know by emailing committee@saicewc.co.za. We welcome your suggestions on how to improve for next year.
