The finals of SAICE WC’s inaugural MERIT competition took place on 10 October 2019 at Aurecon. After eight weeks spent battling it out in the Early Years of the competition, the top six teams came together for six hotly contested final rounds. As explained in our October newsletter, MERIT is a construction simulation game in which teams of up to 6 people work together to make decisions as managers of a fictitious construction company. During the final rounds, teams competed directly against one another for projects and resources, providing a very realistic and challenging experience.

Period 12 started with only 219 points separating the top and bottom teams, but DeConstruction and BullDozer Construction (both from BVi) had strong starts, managing to win work at decent margins and consistently grow their companies as the finals progressed. The two teams were neck-and-neck right to the end with BullDozer just in the lead. In the penultimate round, DeConstruction inched ahead but BullDozer clawed back their lead in an excellent final round finishing 111 points ahead of DeConstruction and more than 1000 points ahead of the bottom placed team.

The winning team received canal walk vouchers and a free SAICE course. A big thanks to all the teams for participating, to Aurecon for kindly providing the venue and catering for the final and to SAICE National Office for their contribution towards to the prizes.
In 2020, we will be taking the competition national! If you would like to know more about the MERIT game and how you or your company can get involved, please email alice.chang@aurecongroup.com or Catherine.blersch@gmail.com.
