OBITUARY

SAICE Western Cape is saddened to hear of the passing of Emeritus Professor George Ekama, who passed away at the age of 73 on Sunday 19 February.

He obtained his BSc degree, a postgraduate diploma and a PhD degree in Engineering, all from the University of Cape Town (UCT). From 1978, he worked as a Research Officer at UCT

Stephen Luger, a technical director at PRDW, addressed the branch on his topic “The Impact of Climate Change on Coastal Erosion and Flooding”. It was an excellent presentation drawing on his significant experience in coastal engineering and the impact climate change would have on it.

The 12th Brunel International Lecture


The Brunel International Lecture series was established in 1999 in memory of Isambard Kingdom Brunel (1806-1859), one of the world’s most respected pioneering engineers. Each lecturer is chosen by the International Committee for his or her contribution to civil engineering. It is also a forum to strengthen the links between ICE and the engineering institutions both in the UK and abroad.

July Branch Meeting: Experiential Leadership and Management


On 17 July 2019 the branch hosted David Ramsey, a civil engineer and qualified coach, who shared some his insights related to experiential leadership and management development in the engineering environment. MERIT Competition: Early Years


Eight brave teams have spent the last 8 weeks battling out the first rounds of SAICE WC’s first local MERIT competition. MERIT is a construction simulation game in which teams of up to 6 people work together to make decisions as managers of a fictitious construction company. It’s a great way for young professionals to learn about the intricacies involved in running a business, strategy and teamwork. The top six teams will be competing in the finals at Aurecon on 10 October.
