THE CHANGING LANSCAPE FOR STRUCTURAL ENGINEERS IN CAPE TOWN

On 24 August Jaco de Villiers addressed the branch with his presentation “The Changing Landscape for Structural Engineers in Cape Town” which was a reflection on his experience as a structural engineer over the past 20-years. He provided a broad introduction to structural engineering and the various building typologies he has been involved with from large warehouse structures through to high-rise buildings in the City centre. He referenced projects he had worked on to illustrate structural principals and provide anecdotes of the various challenges encountered and how they were resolved. It is unlikely many of the audience will be able to look at some of the city centre buildings in the same light again! Jaco closed his presentation with a reflection on the future of structural engineering and the various trends which may disrupt the industry from modular construction and the use of new materials, to sustainable design principals and Building Information Management. Jaco was supported by a strong turn-out of peers and colleagues from as far as Stellenbosch!

ACCESSIBLE RAIL STATION PLATFORM INDEPENDENT GAP FILLER FOR PERSONS WITH REDUCED MOBILITY

On the 15th of July, Dr. Emmanuel Matsika, a senior researcher at the Future Mobility Group (FMG), Newcastle University, gave an open lecture on “Accessible Rail Station Platform Independent Gap Filler for of Persons with Reduced Mobility”. In the lecture, Dr. Matsika highlighted that we must design transport systems that are inclusive because persons with reduced mobility are not necessarily a small group of people.
