The annual Snape Memorial Lecture was instituted by the SAICE Western Cape Branch in 1953 as a tribute to the late Professor Alfred Snape. Prof. Snape was appointed in 1910 to the Chair of Civil Engineering at the South African College, which at the time was the only institution in the country offering courses in engineering. He formulated the curriculum and for many years was the sole lecturer in the Department. The College became the University of Cape Town in 1918, after which it was able to confer degrees in its own right. Prof. Snape continued in the chair until his death in 1946. In 2011 due to unforseen circumstances it was not possible to present the Snape Memorial Lecture and it was postponed to early 2012, be sure not to miss it on the 22nd February 2012.
We would be very interested in hearing your comments and stories about past Snape Memorial Lectures, including any old lectures or books you may have. Please send them to us via the comments facility below or get in touch via the Contact page.

On the 22nd June 2011 Justin Coetzee gave a very insightful presentation to the Western Cape Branch on the topic 2025: The Age of the iGeneer. The presentation discussed the challenges the next generation of engineers face, key charateristics of this generation and what the future of engineering could be like in 2025. The presentation attracted a great amount of interest from those who attended and was well very insightful! For those of you that missed out you can download the lecture in pdf format here.
